The Sr. Development Engineer, Sports Medicine R&D is responsible for sustaining and product support activities in addition to new product development and product transfer activities.
The candidate will also be responsible for leadership of product sustaining activities.
They will apply analytical and practical engineering and leadership principals to manage the planning and execution of fully validated & verified medical devices, design the devices and associated test methods, evaluate device risk and ensure compliance with the appropriate standards and documentation requirements for the product.
This role will be focused on some of the fastest-growing, high revenue generating and exciting product lines at Smith and Nephew to serve our patients and customers in the shoulder, hip, and knee repair market.This position is ideal for an experienced, knowledgeable and interdisciplinary engineer capable of providing technical contribution and leadership on medium scale projects and / or multiple projects.
The candidate will be required to build strong relationships across the organization to shape the direction of the product and therapy.
This position is a P3 levelWhat will you be doing?Leadership, direction and execution of engineering projects and tasks related to product support and sustaining engineering such as:Use empirical, numerical and experimental methods to analyse physical systems and designs (Minitab, MATLAB, etc)Identify and mitigate design and product risksDefine test methods and conduct testing of complex mechanical systemsExplore and understand the root cause of technical problems encountered (e.g.
by observation, manipulation, and testing of failed systems, and proposing solutions)Make critical judgements and decisions, documenting these decisions with supporting evidenceSupport pre-clinical and clinical testing of devicesSupport product complaint investigations or other production related improvements (NCR, CAPA, etc.
)Lead medium scale product support programs with interdisciplinary team members.Support and execution of new product development and product transfer products: (10%)Design and develop medical device components and assemblies as well as associated test, fabrication or inspection fixturesUnderstand detailed requirements and specificationsMaintain a modern understanding of new technologies and research toolsPerform tolerance analyses of complex assembliesWork with internal departments and external vendors to obtain prototype parts and to understand their capabilities and limitationsSupport our intellectual property portfolio through generation and support of novel ideas and conceptsConduct detailed design reviews at various design stagesLead and support the development of pilot and production lines in support of product development projectsTroubleshoot and implement improvements into initial production line plans to assist with production build successConduct detailed design reviews at various design stagesWhat will you need to be successful?
Education & Experience: Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar discipline) + 3-5 yrs of relative experience or MS in Engineering + 3 yrs of relative experience; with a minimum of 2 years' experience within the medical device industry.Experience in project management or project leadership.Languages: Advanced English level.Knowledge: Knowledge and practical application of medical device product development regulations (ISO, GMP, FDA, CE) and design controls.Demonstrated mechanical design acumen with solid modelling or CAD capabilities (Finite Element Analysis capabilities are a plus)Competences: The candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to work on complex problems related to design, materials and product use, and exercise judgment using their expertise while guiding others to solve the problems within existing procedures with limited guidance from management as required.
