Position Description
The School of Information at San José State University is pleased to announce a search for an Assistant professor in Instructional Design & Technology (IDT) beginning in August 2025 for our brand new, 100% online master's of instructional design & technology program. This faculty member will also serve as the program coordinator and work closely with the Director to launch this new program. Faculty will join SJSU, recently ranked #4 Public School in the Country , a university known for its transformative impact on students' lives. Here, they will have the opportunity to help shape this new program. The faculty member will have a hands-on role in developing and growing the program, and will be active in all aspects of teaching, research, and service.
San José State University's School of Information (SJSU - School of Information - Information Science School ) prepares individuals for careers as information professionals, offering a variety of bachelor's and master's degrees programs, doctoral partnership programs, certification and credentials programs. Graduates work in diverse areas of the information profession, such as user experience design, digital asset management, information architecture, electronic records management, information governance, digital preservation, and librarianship. Our school has awarded graduate degrees to information professionals for more than 55 years. The Master of Science in Instructional Design & Technology will be a 100% online and asynchronous degree program that will prepare students to work in teaching, training, organizational management, and human performance improvement environments. The program prepares students to apply an information, data-centered, and systematic process that identifies learning/organizational outcomes, learning/performance objectives, and ideal performance as part of a front-end analysis to designing and developing the curriculum/organizational processes needed to accomplish outcomes. Students learn to use a wide array of instructional/organizational/data strategies and technologies for training, teaching and learning, assessment and evaluation, and the design and development of informatics/data analytic systems to improve student/individual/organizational performance. Students are also taught how to assess and evaluate the quality of the entire process using advanced analytics as part of a continuously improving performance loop using both formative and summative evaluation. Courses include Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies, Systematic Design of Instruction, Design Thinking, Theories of Teaching, Learning, and Human Cognition, Instructional Design and Development, Learning Analytics and Data-Driven Evaluation and Assessment, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Teaching and Learning Environments.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Instructional Design/Technology, a closely related field, or demonstration of experience in Instructional Design and Technology.
An earned doctorate by the start of appointment.
A record of scholarly and professional achievement.
Evidence of potential for teaching effectiveness.
Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
100% online teaching experience is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated leadership experience.
Practical experience (from industry, academia, or elsewhere), that will support the development, marketing, and growth of this new program.
Teaching capabilities across the program areas mentioned above.
Have demonstrated the ability to support diverse student populations, such as SJSU's.
Collegial faculty with a track record of research or curricular collaboration.
Ability to lead internships, practicum, advise projects, or provide hands-on learning experiences in the areas above.
Experience in program assessment and improvement, curriculum development, or collaborating with industry or advisory groups on program alignment.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as program coordinator in collaboration with the Director, Associate Director, and other program leaders.
Actively participate in the design, development, and growth of the new 100% online Master of Instruction Design & Technology, which is expected to draw students from all over the country.
Build an active research program.
Contribute to the Instruction Design & Technology curriculum.
Build a collegial relationship with fellow faculty members in the iSchool and across campus.
Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
Organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System.
Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Other Duties
Note that all San José State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, some faculty duties may lead to designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to complete Clery Act training and to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution.
Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety). The President may recommend or require compliance with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness and allows the core mission and activities of the campus to continue.

Although there is a preference for candidates who wish to establish an on-campus presence, this is a position where work may be conducted remotely and/or out of state.
